On November 27th, the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy achieved a significant environmental step by announcing a new protective status for the Aoos/Vjosa River Basin. This crucial decision marks the area, extending from the Northern Pindos National Park to the Greek-Albanian border, as a Protected Natural Formation and Protected Landscape. This move is significant as it covers a previously unprotected region of the transboundary river, underscoring Greece’s commitment to environmental conservation.
The next phase in solidifying this commitment involves adopting a ministerial decision to establish precise development control regulations and restrictions for the designated area. This is vital in preserving the region’s natural beauty and ecological integrity against unsustainable development and environmental degradation.
The main goal of this initiative is to elevate the protection status of the Aoos area to that of a national park, which is achieved by expanding the boundaries of the Northern Pindos National Park up to the Greek-Albanian border. This strategic move aims to bring the entire river basin under a unified protection regime. The long-term vision is potentially integrating this area with the neighboring Vjosa National Park in Albania, thereby creating Europe’s first Transboundary Wild River National Park, Aoos/Vjosa. Such a park would be a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and natural landscapes and a symbol of cross-border environmental collaboration.
Coordinated Efforts by MedINA
MAW partner, the Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos (MedINA), led the successful coordination of these efforts in Greece. Their dedication and collaborative approach played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to fruition. MedINA’s involvement highlights the power of partnership and shared goals in achieving significant environmental milestones.
